If you’re not used to public speaking, a teleprompter can be a useful tool to have in your arsenal. A teleprompter can help you keep your speech on track, and make everything run a bit more smoothly. There’s just one issue: Most free and web-based teleprompter for with an auto scroll, meaning that if you pause for any reason why you’re reading, your teleprompter is going to leave you behind.

This week I came across a great alternative: Teleprompt.me. The free web-based teleprompter uses your computer’s built-in microphone to listen to what you’re saying and then scroll as you speak. If you’re speaking in front of the masses in a concert hall it’s not going to do you much good, but if you’re shooting a YouTube video in your living room then it’s the perfect solution.

To use it, you just go to the tool’s site using Google Chrome (it only works with Chrome) and type some text or paste in the script you’ve created elsewhere. Pro tip: you do that in the window in the far right, not in the center of the screen.

After you have text in the tool, you can change its size and color, or flip it using small controls at the top of the page.

Once you’ve inputted all your text, all you have to do is read. When the site hears the words displayed on the screen it will start scrolling. Since it’s controlled by your speech, you can speak at a more natural pace than you would if you were using an auto-scrolling teleprompter.

I tried it with a handful of different text (including this article) and it worked flawlessly.

If you’re already using an auto-scrolling web-based teleprompter then it’s definitely worth trying out.
